Some cultures believe dreams are sent by the gods, that they foretell the future, that our ‘essence’ genuinely leaves our bodies. Freud believed all dreams were wish fulfilments, depictions of distorted or repressed wishes. Jung held the view that along with dreams coloured by our personal experiences and those formed by our own place in society there are also certain archetypal dreams which have been dreamt across the globe from the very beginnings of our species.
